IRS Announces Major Changes To Assist Taxpayers 2/26/2011

The IRS has announced major changes to the tax collection processes used by the agency in order to assist taxpayers in resolving tax debt.  In this economic environment many citizens and business are struggling to satisfy their tax liabilities.  Recognizing this economic environment and seeking to facilitate the resolution of tax liabilities the IRS announced major changes on February 24, 2011.

A portion of the release is stated below

"Today’s announcement centers on the IRS making important changes to its lien filing practices that will lessen the negative impact on taxpayers. The changes include:

  • Significantly increasing the dollar threshold when liens are generally issued, resulting in fewer tax liens.
  • Making it easier for taxpayers to obtain lien withdrawals after paying a tax bill.
  • Withdrawing liens in most cases where a taxpayer enters into a Direct Debit Installment Agreement.
  • Creating easier access to Installment Agreements for more struggling small businesses.
  • Expanding a streamlined Offer in Compromise program to cover more taxpayers"

Other notable changes have occurred in recent years.  In 2008, the IRS provided lien relief to certain qualify individuals attempting to sell or refinance a home and in 2009 the IRS updated its policies to provide more flexibility for those facing tax problems and in 2010 the IRS held over 1000 open houses nationwide to assist taxpayers with tax issues. However, many who face the IRS have still found it difficult to navigate the policies and procedures of this agency often leading to increased tax liability and legal implications.  The tax code is complex so even the most knowledgeable consumer or business entity can face uncertain tax liabilities without the use and guidance of a tax professional.
